Supplements for Joints – Omega-3 and More

Omega-3 is becoming very popular among Americans as it promises health benefits. Studies prove that Omega-3 supplements for joints are the first choice second to multivitamins.  Consumption of Omega-3 supplements offers numerous benefits that are also supported by scientific research done by AHA and WHO.  Scientists have come to the conclusion that a diet high in Omega-3 fatty-acids but little Omega-6 fatty-acids contributes to healthy a heart.  Omega-3 & omega-6 are considered as essential fatty-acids but our body does not manufacture them.  These nutrients have to be obtained through diet.  Both of these have opposing effect on functions of body. Omega-3 produces hormones that support inflammation, blood clotting and cellular proliferation whereas Omega-6 produces hormones that are known to regulate the same functions but in the opposite direction.  Our hormones have to be balanced to stay healthy.

Omega6 is provided by seeds, nuts and refined vegetable-oils.  Oils with omega-6 are used for manufacturing processed foods.  Soybean oil present in most of the fast foods contributes up to 20% of the calories in our diet.  As intake of fast & processed foods is increasing in our diet, more of omega-6 and less omega-3 is going in.  Omega6 is 14-25% higher as compared to omega-3 and this imbalance of essential fatty-acids in our body can lead to many ailments.  It is advised to increase omega 3 intake by consuming fish (salmon, tuna, halibut and mackerel) two times a week.
